CREST goes to Town!

We had a lovely day for our tour of the Palace of Westminster on July 12th. With perfect timing the coach and train travellers met up at exactly the same time - although the ones who walked from Waterloo had stopped to take photos on the way!

Pauline and Clive dealt very efficiently with all the paperwork and we were soon ready to make our way through the security checks to the Jubilee Café for coffee and cakes!

We met up with Anne, our very interesting guide, in Westminster Hall. She knew so much about the Palace of Westminster, past and present, and answered all our questions.

We weren't allowed to take photos on our tour, but here are a few highlights:

  • Central Lobby, where television interviews are held, has it's own post office!
  • Royal Gallery displays portraits of the Kings and Queens of England - and it's where the Lords who don't have offices "hot desk"!
  • Victoria Tower is 14 floors high and houses all the Acts of Parliament
  • House of Lords - we had an unscheduled, but very interesting, chat with Lord Peter Digby-Jones about the reform of the House of Lords

Unfortunately, we couldn't tour the House of Commmons as there was an extra sitting, but it did mean we could go up into the public gallery and listen to a live debate - a real bonus!
